| Growing up in Billings, I would be hard-pressed to remember any single legislator as universally well-liked as John Bohlinger. I've always had the deepest of respect for John, who has been the Platonic form of principled moderate leadership. He was also the legislator my deeply conservative grandfather mentioned whenever he thought he needed to talk to a lawmaker about an issue troubling him. Politically, my grandfather and I agreed on little. In fact, respect for John Bohlinger may have been it.
That said, the Montana Republicans are currently facing big problems. Some of those problems are a result of a hard-line group in the party that is primarying moderates out. They ran out Mark Noennig. They ran out Bernie Olson. They ran out Sam Kitzenberg. They're apparently talking about running out John Brueggeman (which is almost humorous; John's a personal friend, but I'm not even sure I'd characterize him as a moderate, just a reasonable conservative; they'll probably primary Jim Shockley next).
Now they're telling John Bohlinger, the Lieutenant Governor of Montana, one of only three statewide elected Republicans, that he's not welcome at their convention this year. That's too bad.
As Lt. Gov. Bohlinger put it himself, the Republican Party used to be a big tent that included both Barry Goldwater and Nelson Rockefeller. Increasingly, it's hard to believe either one of them could find a home there these days. |
