Demand quality reporting, part 2

While I'm a lukewarm supporter of Hillary Clinton -- at best -- I've always been creeped out by the weird hatred she's generated on the right. Weird accusations implying that she's a genetic freak who acts outside the inherent characteristics of her gender. Which means she's ambitious, outspoken, opinionated, and powerful. That is, the very qualities required of a US Senator.

Unfortunately, though, weird reactions to women have been too frequent this election cycle.

Media Matters has a couple of examples. Tucker Carlson had a field day with a Hillary Clinton nutcracker, saying of the Senator, "I have often said, when she comes on television, I involuntarily cross my legs." Drudge is a little more blunt when he twists Elizabeth Edwards words praising her husband's stand on women's issues to an accusation that Clinton is a "gender bender," behaving "like a man."

But at least that's the kind of idiotic attitudes you might expect from right-wing male pundits. But how to begin to explain the Washington Post's profile of Senator Clinton's cleavage that appeared in today's issue?

Vanessa notes the impossible dichotomy Clinton faces as she's simultaneously painted as a freakish shemale and a slutty cleavage bearer:

Why, oh why can't we have a hot, long-haired candidate with a "plunging neckline"? Oh right, because she would probably be deemed an immoral slut. Better dowdy than dirty, right? This just makes me fume.

Surely there's a space for Senator Clinton in our minds that's between dowdy and slutty, right?

The summer of 2008 promises to be stomach-turning if this is just the gentle breeze that presages the rhetorical storm of the general election. Folks, you ain't seen nuthin' yet!

And that's not even mentioning crap like this that's dredged up for Obama!

I knew I could count on you, squid (0.00 / 0)
That's exactly the kind of crap I mean. You don't have to ridicule a candidate's gender or appearance if you disagree with her politics. In fact, you shouldn't.

The way..... (0.00 / 0)
the democrats play the game all cards are on the table.  This woman and her husband have a habit of destroying people so why in the hell should they expect to be treated any different. Nothing should be out of play with Hillary Clinton and I mean nothing....

...the victim. My favorite. That was probably the most childish thing you've ever said. 'They were meanies first.' Boo hoo. You have got to be one of oldest people who post on here, so why do you act like a child? Grow up, squid. If you want to attack them then have some substance. Bring some discussion.

You know, Mathello (0.00 / 0)
Id rather be the age I am and what I am instead of the age you are and what you are.  I couldn't handle the demotion and the loss of self respect.

Please bear with me... (0.00 / 0)
I'm kinda in a festive mood.  My red counts, although low, are  maintaining.  My whites are behaving and the CT scan, I assume, since I haven't heard anything, has shown no malignancy(liberalism) in my manly chest.  Youse people are in deep doo doo....:~)

Communication or Tabloidization? (0.00 / 0)
Communication has been downgraded in media to tabloidization (if I may coin such a non-word). The magic of speech and articulate use of language has long since been degraded by advertising into a crude parody of addressing another person. Talking heads are a dime a dozen and Rupert Murdoch wants to own them all. Nice ass? Nice suit? Ugly tie? Who cares about "cleavage" or "trophy wives" as commentary on public policy or politicians? Mainstream media is competing with YouTube for the attention of adolescent and/or commercially techno-fixated minds (sic). When you can watch people's heads being severed from their bodies with the click of an online button, crudeness becomes acceptable on all occasions, even if it means a shooting spree because someone looked at you funny on the way to class. Bad hair day? Shoot first from the lips and the hips! That seems to be what "news" is all about these days. That seems to be what "government" is all about these days. It's a very sad state of affairs.

Well put Jay (0.00 / 0)
We already know that elections get uglier by the cycle, but I think we're on the edge of the abyss in 2008. If we don't somehow pull out of this nosedive I'd say this Democracy is doomed. We're supposed to be moving forward. Christ this is depressing...
