Recount Update: Republican Wins in Laurel

by: Matt Singer

Tue Nov 28, 2006 at 17:02:49 PM MST

Final Update -- Eaton apparently lost. Three votes. There's still a recount in Jefferson County, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Still, Speaker Sales may be not not such a bad thing.

Original Post -- The Laurel recount is still going. According to Ed Kemmick's story, as of 3:15, with the largest of 5 precincts counted, Kerns' count was the same as the canvass tally and Eaton was one ballot short of where she was at in the canvass.

Four more precincts to be counted.

Update -- I just heard that Emilie is not down. Apparently, there is a misplaced ballot or somesuch.

By the way, for you folks just tuning in. Emilie Eaton is the Democrat. Krayton Kerns is the Republican. Before the recount, they were tied. A tie goes to the Governor and, therefore, to Emilie.

Update 2 -- Now I'm hearing Eaton is down by two.

What happened to the one ballot? (0.00 / 0)
The total ballots previously canvassed must be equal to the ballots counted today.  There cannot be "one ballot short."  I'm curious about the whereabouts of the one ballot; or was it counted as an overvote? or write-in?

SOS Website (0.00 / 0)
Brad's website has "official" results. Does that mean it's done or what?

Still Two Recounts (0.00 / 0)
The Public Service Commission race in District 5 and the state house race between Sheila Hogan and Scott Mendenhall. Neither was as close as this race, though, so it is basically over.

Sales to the rescue (0.00 / 0)
Looks like the session is going to be a stinger for the Liberal left that wants to spend the bejeezes out of OUR excess tax revenues.  So long short term rebate, so-long mandated fully funded full day kindegarten.  I can't wait to see what comes of this now.  You guys now have to deal with Majority leader Michael Lange, and Speaker Scott Sales for the next 2 years.

Yes and heeeeelllooooo (0.00 / 0)
to sending that excess tax revenue to rich out of staters!

I love it when we can make the rich richer and mash the middle class, the poor and children into the dirt!

That's just stupid think (0.00 / 0)
Ok I know you might be riled up over the federal state of things in this nation but how assinine of a comment.  No way in Montana would any politician have in mind helping the rich out of staters.  Just because we need permanent, everybody included, not just a select few, property tax relief doesn't mean we favor out of staters.  Isn't it only right to make it an across the board adjustment rather than be socialistic and pick the ones who get the relief.  If you had any knowledge of our tax system, our income tax brackets are fair across the board.  In fact in 2005 anyone with taxable income over 13,900 only paid 6.9%.  That doesn't seem to favor anyone.  It's across the board fair.  Your remarks just don't hold water here.

MORON ALERT! (0.00 / 0)
Look, moron, when the Rethuglies controlled everything, they gave FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY million dollars in tax breaks to corporations, a full EIGHTY PERCENT of that to the five largest outta state corporations!  Boy, now that was a great idea!

It's better than willfully ignorant. (0.00 / 0)
Republicans promised during the election to enact a property tax cut that disproportionately benefited non-residents and huge corporations.

So no, it's not stupid think.

In addition, (0.00 / 0)
During the Republican years the only class of property tax that did not get reduced was homeowners.

So Republicans roll out a plan to help non-residents and corporations during the election. They have a long history of helping non-residents and corporations and of NOT helping Montana homeowners. Now, it doesn't take much logic to figure out that Republicans are probably going to... help non-residents and corporations in the future.

Unless they have suddenly veered to the left and Sales is actually a tree hugging, Birk wearing, socialist and that is what you actually mean by 'Sales to the rescue'.

A shift (0.00 / 0)
I, as a previous candidate will tell you that there has been an inevitable shift to moderatism.  While Sales won, by a razor thin margin, it doesn't mean we all are superconservatives.  This state is in a, ahem, state of change and the GOP is going to have to adapt to that while also keeping a fiscal eye on everything.  We know that when a company grows it must spend money to sustain the growth.  We also know that there has to be constraint on wasteful spending.

And ya also knew...................... (0.00 / 0)
And you also knew that deregulation was a good idea!  Sorry, but you belong to a party of morons.  There are NO true republicans left in Helena.  Bohlinger, Kitzenberg both essentially bolted.  And I'm sure that John Cobb will do the right thing and leave some day  too.  And then, that'll be it.  But to your credit, you DO seem to have an endless supply of folks who are judy mars's intellectual equivalent.  And some even dumber!  Tell me, what is the highest grade level achieved for corky  stapletone and mikey lange?  And why do you continue to elevate people who are essentially uneducated idiots?  And how bout Sales?  Did he make it through jr. high?

[ Parent ]
Well, (0.00 / 0)
The previous Republican years weren't led by so called superconservatives. The regular, run of the mill conservatives decided that it was good to give tax breaks to out of staters and rich corporations and they are the ones that decided to roll out the afore mentioned plan during the last campaign. This is a bread and butter position of the Republican party.

The only time that Republicans keep an eye on fiscal sanity is when they are in the minority. When they are in the majority they are like 2 15 year old girls at the Mall of America with Daddy's platinum card.

Spending money on education for our children is wastefull but giving money to corporations that are already making a healthy profit is sensible. Got it.

I was afraid that would happen.

Eaton goes down (0.00 / 0)
It might not be over, maybe Walt Schweitzer or somebody with the administartion can find a republican or two with a State Job to switch parties.

Good Deal... (0.00 / 0)
At least when I go back to visit my home town I won't have to hold my nose the whole time I'm there...
