Biometrics at MSU: Cool (and alarming?)

by: Matt Singer

Mon Jul 30, 2007 at 10:22:43 AM MST

MSU is introducing biometric hand readers as an optional replacement for student ID cards for things like dining service.
Clarinda Marcoff, interim manager of the Cat Card Office, said the new hand scan program is voluntary, but every new student who has gone through orientation so far this summer wanted to participate. She thought some students or parents might object, but no one did.
I'm actually a bit surprised that no one objected (or even opted out). At the same time, this is a cool use of technology and it does make people's lives easier.

But there are still some interesting privacy questions here, including ones that are raised specifically because MSU is a state institution.

Thoughts?

I'm not so sure. (0.00 / 0)
I understand the objective fear concerning label and identity.  But proof of ID, removed from human foible, is just too great a good to be dismissed because of that fear.

I'm certain that many of us on campus will be required to 'opt-in' (isn't that an oxymoron) to the new system.  The point of contention isn't really privacy as a much as continuous tracking of action in a closed enviroment.  That isn't a matter of what others know of you, but what others know of what you do.  I'm having a hard time rationally equating the one to the other.

I'ma gonna have to think on this a whiles.

I guess my question is:  Will they need to use their handprint for identification in places where they didn't need to use their ID card?
