Republicans Clamoring for Primary to Brad Johnson

by: Matt Singer

Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 08:40:14 AM MST

Wow -- there's some anger and disappointment among the Republican base toward their lone Montana statewide elected official (as opposed to federal). In the comments to one of Jay's posts regarding Johnson's utter inadequacy, this comment  from 'Interested' appears:
Maybe Johnson will take a hit in the primary from his own party....
The GOP has to recognize they have a real problem on their hands, the thoughts of Joe Lamson appointing the next Chief Election Deputy has to make Erik Iverson and the GOP break out in a cold sweat. If Iverson is worth his salt at all he'll go find someone to take Johnson on in the primary and rid himself of this embarassment. Mark Simonich is currently unemployed, maybe Janice Doggett, the current Chief Legal Council? Show us your stuff Erik, or Linda McCulloch is going to show you the door.
Elsewhere, these thoughts from 'RW' show up:
Johnson is inept. He is arrogant. He seems to think that 'elected' and 'anointed' are synonyms. He is an abject failure as secretary of state, and has no skills or experience to recommend him for further public office. (The 'Peter Principle' applies here). Johnson is disdainful of the legislature and legislators, and thinks the workings of government as a whole are a waste of time. He loves paid junkets, however. Such 'perks' of public office are reason enough for Johnson to seek renewal of a privileged place at the head table of what he obviously considers the public trough. Johnson is not highly regarded among 'his own,' however, so it would not be surprising if he faced a Republican primary contest in June 2008. Another possibility is that the Republican Party will let Johnson 'twist in the wind' as they concentrate on political contests for the legislature.
Different commenters and, I should note, different IP addresses. Based on what I can tell, these are neither 'sock puppets' nor 'concern trolls' for Republicans.

So here's a good question: is Johnson facing a primary?

And, whether he does or not, can the Republicans beat back a campaign from Linda McCulloch, a strong campaigner with a sharp team alongside her?

Update -- RW and Interested are objecting to my characterizing them as Republicans, preferring to call themselves independents. Sure, whatever. All indications are that they are plugged into conservative rumor circles. I could be wrong, but I know at least one of them -- and that individual is definitely not a Dem and this person does have some pretty clear GOP credentials.

Whaaaa? (0.00 / 0)
Are the Repubbies REALLY stupid enough to run mark simonich for anything?  This guy is as sleazy/cheesey as they come!  A former timber industry puke who was imported to Montana and appointed to run Ratco's DEQ!  And what a wonderful tenure he had at DEQ.  Sheesh.  They really MUST be scraping the bottome of the barrel.  I mean, brad johnson looks DAMN good next to simonvitch!

Not Republican, Not Democrat (0.00 / 0)
Matt, I don't have ties with either Republican or Democratic parties. My friends, associates and other informed residents of this state are "all over the page" as far as political leanings and philosophies go (although Far Right does not seem to register on my radar). With that understanding in mind, my observations and comments about Brad Johnson are highly independent, though (I believe) representative of similarly independent (even "progressive") thought around the state. I have no idea who 'Interested' is, and that doesn't matter. It does seem to me, though, that (s)he, unlike me and my bi- or non-partisan communicants, does indeed have an interest in seeing an alternative to Johnson as Republican candidate for secretary of state. I don't really care. Linda McCulloch may not be the only Democratic candidate seeking that office, either.

RW, what I'm interested in is integrity! (0.00 / 0)
I too am a very independent voter, but it is vital that we elect someone to the office of SOS who can at least fog up a mirror in the morning. Johnson is not qualified for this job, he has no background and this is not an office for someone to do on the job training in. The only thing Johnson knew about this office when he ran is what his friend Jim Waltermire told him about it and he's been deceases for years. Heaven help us all!

No quarrel here! (0.00 / 0)
I don't disagree one bit. I am willing to bet that if Jim Waltermire were still alive, Brad Johnson would not spin his favorite yarn that Waltermire was his "mentor." Johnson is a total phony. We would be better off without a secretary of state than to reelect Brad Johnson.

Update (0.00 / 0)
Matt, I just noticed your update. I know of no rumors (conservative or otherwise) that anyone is planning to challenge Brad Johnson in a Republican primary next June. I am not an "insider" in any party, by any means. The basis for my suggestion that "it would not be surprising" if there were a Republican primary challenge to Johnson in 2008 is that there is a vehemence level against Johnson on the left, the right, and in the center that I notice whenever the subject of Brad Johnson comes up. If there are actually "conservative rumor circles" to the effect that a primary challenge against Johnson is actually being planned or considered, I am not privy to any of that.

I just had this brought to my attention: www.lindamcculloch.com
It looks like the Republican Party is in fact gearing up for a match between Johnson and McCulloch.
If Brad Johnson "brings real experience from the real world," the "real world" is in serious trouble. Once Johnson's "real world" history is examined closely, his goose is cooked. The gander will eat whatever little meat is left on his bones.
Poor, poor, pitiful Brad....

that site is hilarious (0.00 / 0)
they seriously need to update it, given the recent audit

Matt, regarding your UPDATE!....... (0.00 / 0)
OK, my last, best shot at making some sense out of Brad Johnson's prediciment! What a sad state of affairs when a guy in Johnson's position can't find a political friend/supporter/confidant to take 60K to work in a critical and important job like the Chief Elections Deputy position. If Johnson were important to the GOP you'd think Iverson/Rehberg would be helping to save his sorry soul politically wouldn't you? It's apparent they aren't going to take a bullet for him either. You'd think they could get somebody like maybe Larry 'Hal' Grinde to step in for that kind of money. For starters, whoever takes the job will not only have to answer to the Chief Deputy but to Janice Doggett the Chief Legal Council. She was instrumental in Simonich's demise as well as Elaine Gravely leaving. She's smart enough but a tough cookie to deal with and you don't want to cross her or you're toast! Her husband will no doubt be managing Johnson's re-election campaign, he's a well established lobbyist but has a dismal record when it comes to campaign management. I believe RW was right, when he said that the GOP is more interested in focusing their efforts on legislative seats and letting Johnson 'twist in the wind' on this one. They're stepping around him like a steamin' dog turd here, Johnson's damaged goods with the GOP faithgful after the flip-flip-fiasco on Same Day Voter Registration. Near as I can tell Linda McCulloch can start to think about how she's going to decorate her new office in the capitol. Let's hope she has better luck than Johnson did in management style and can hold a staff together for more than a few months as a time!
