MT-Sen: GOP Ready to Throw in the Towel?

by: Matt Singer

Mon Dec 04, 2006 at 07:06:21 AM MST

John J. Miller of National Review writes:
In presidential elections, the state of Montana is as red as a ripe tomato. Yet Democrats currently control the governorship, the legislature, and both Senate seats. Sen. Max Baucus is insurmountably popular, but if he were to drop out for some unexpected reason, Republican congressman Denny Rehberg might have a good opportunity to succeed him.
Other than the fact that we don't control the legislature, this is basically true. Here' the thing -- I wouldn't bet on Max dropping out. It's still interesting to read that D.C. conventional wisdom is becoming that challenging Max is a fool's errand. The same can be said of challenging Brian. We'll see how many fools the Republican Party has.

No Dearth of Republican Fools (0.00 / 0)
If the current Republican leadership in both the U. S. House and the Montana House of Representatives is any indication, there are plenty of Republican fools to go around.

Congressman-elect Sali, of Idaho, was just elected President of the incoming GOP Freshman Class in Congress.  Sali has been referred to by other Idaho Republican elected officials as, "a total idiot", which should qualify him as being a fool as well.

In a classical sense, The Fool was often someone who told the truth, albeit under the guise of silliness and humor.

The Republican fools qualify on the silliness part, but certainly don't when it comes to telling the truth.

Jim Toevs, Hot Springs

Yes, an insult to Fools to be associated w/ certain (0.00 / 0)
Republicans.  As you say, the "Fool" in the King's court such as "The Fool" in King Lear was the only one allowed to talk truth to power.  I always thought that Bush needed a Fool.  He got one without asking when Stephen Colbert ripped him one at the National Press Dinner.
But it would also be foolish for us to paint all Republicans with a broad brush.  The moderates could make a comeback like they are in other places although it looks like they are coming over in droves to the Democratic Party.  As I said 2 years ago in "Hey, Get Your Own Party", I am afraid that all these blue dogs think it's easier to take over the Democratic Party, kick the progressive ie. FDR Dems out and then rule as Republican Lite.  I fear a real war within the Democratic Party can no longer be avoided.

Max (0.00 / 0)
Max won't drop out, and he'll be re-elected.

If the GOP can field a likeable candidate, Schweitzer will lose. Say what you want about popularity polls, but Schweitzer was ineffective getting his candidates elected.

I hope Denny Rehberg decides to stay where he is.

Schweitzer was ineffective (0.00 / 0)
With Schweitzer at the top of the ticket, the GOP lost the legislature. This year Schweitzer focused everything on a very similar candidate running in the big game...who won.

If that is ineffective, then Burns and Martz were effective and Montana's biggest lake should be found at the top of Triple Divide Peak.

Eric Has Only Nailed One Race That I Know Of (4.00 / 1)
And that was Rehberg/Lindeen, where he was betting the same way 95% of the bets went.

He was wrong on Tester/Morrison , wrong on Tester/Burns, wrong on Van Dyk/Jarussi, wrong on Van Dyk/McDermott. 3 of these 4 races weren't even close -- they were 20% victories.

In other words, if it's an even potentially competitive race, Eric will be wrong.

Just sayin'.

a WHAT???? (0.00 / 0)

A "likeable" candidate??  From the goppers?  Coobs, you too funny!  Who might that be, Coobsie?  Coobs, nazis are NOT very likeable people.  But maybe you'd like to suggest someone from your party who IS likeable.  Schweizter appointed one, and the other left on his own accord!  That bout narrows the field to one, John Cobb, who can't seem to STOMACHE the rightwing nutjobs like you of his own party.  So, Coobs, who is likeable?  Dopey Rheburp, Booby Keenan, Soupy Sales, Joe Bullalot?
