Clinton allegedly to take SoS job

by: Jay Stevens

Mon Nov 17, 2008 at 19:54:37 PM MST

The Guardian:

Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.

And, as without skipping a beat, the press is there with drama:

Former President Bill Clinton's international business dealings, global foundation and penchant for going off script could present a significant obstacle to Hillary Clinton becoming secretary of state, observers say.

Can you image what the media feeding frenzy would have been like had Senator Clinton won the Democratic nomination? And wouldn't these same liabilities against Clinton for the SoS job have also been a problem in the Oval office?

Still, I believe it when it's announced. It makes perfect sense for Obama...but I don't understand why Clinton would want the job. Is it that she dislikes the Senate? Or did she burn some bridges during the election, and now faces only a supporting role there? Or maybe she just wants to be Secretary of State.

The Lion is making health care his number one priority. Another very powerful senator is doing the same thing: Baucus. That's going to be a crowded bill. There are a lot of senators that have Clinton's back on this issue. I think she would be comfortable leaving the Senate to serve. It would be well for Obama. His biggest rival working with him to make things better. Only good things come of this.

If she can't be president, (0.00 / 0)
it only makes sense she'd love to be SoS. Bill has been traveling extensively around the world, and Hillary has been tied to the stateside, first with the Senate, then the campaign for the nomination.

Now that she can't be president, does she just want to spend the rest of her career in D.C. in the Senate while her husband has all the fun galavanting around the world, hob-nobbing with the heads? Or to put it another way, was the Senate just a stepping stone, and now that the path doesn't end at 1600 Pennsylvania, is there any reason to keep following the yellow brick road?

2-4 years at SoS puts Hillary on equal footing with Bill on the world circuit--not that the First Lady didn't get her the world's attention. The time working at SoS, though, will cement her place in history. And after she leaves the post, the Clinton's will have the perfect swan song as they travel the world together doing what they love: the schmooze that never ends...

I think that for a consolation prize, it makes perfect sense that SoS is at the top of Hillary's list. Who knows, she may have squeezed that concession out of Obama at that secret meeting after the primary was over: offer me the post, and I'll campaign for you like its 1999.

...Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999...

And besides, she'll probably be really good at it... two-step over Tuzla aside...
