McGrath is in Supreme Court race

by: Matt Singer

Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 15:05:37 PM MDT

It looks like Mike McGrath is in. The man who won his second term as Attorney General while uncontested is the first announced candidate for chief justice.

McGrath goes into this the prohibitive favorite. He is well-respected, has solid fundraising ability, and is popular in the state. Plus he just has high name ID. Anyone looking to mount a challenge will definitely think twice.

On top of that, McGrath will no doubt be a good chief justice. The job of the chief justice is to be a justice, which McGrath will likely do well, and oversee the administrative end of the court. McGrath has managed fairly large operations and comes in with a background that will be helpful.

I'm glad you added Terry to the list. I thought it was interesting that we was laying down some bank on commercials for his private practice earlier this year. Does anyone think he is Gray's choice? Because it looked either like it was something that could have been coordinated or just a bit too coincidental.

Don't think so (0.00 / 0)
Terry ran against Karla in 2000. They come from fairly different judicial philosophies. I don't think Terry would be Gray's first choice.

Are there any substantial rumors or just whisps?

I dealt with this man when we were trying to get some sentences reviewed in the wake of the Innocence Project freeing James Bromgard. The evidence against Bromgard was trumped up by a pathologist, Arnold Melnikoff, who doctored it and manipulated statistics - it was plain the man was a fraud, and he had a role in putting many others behind bars in Montana. We asked McGrath to review the cases, if only to exonerate the innocent.

He Behaved exactly as a politician would behave - no interest in justice, only appearances. What was done was done, and he had no interest in even reviewing cases that Melnikoff had touched. I found his behavior disturbing.
