I got an email from MEIC yesterday urging me to ask Denny Rehberg to protect our water by voting against HR 4402. I thought about all that Denny has done for us that person who has done much to stand in the way of us getting adequate healthcare coverage, financial aid for college, clean air standards in our own towns and he has even obstructed all of the Democratic proposals to create the jobs that desperately need to be done. I had to learn if he sponsored HR 4402.
HR 4402 would:
Allow federal agencies to exempt mining from review under the National Environmental Policy Act. NEPA assures that everyday citizens can take part in the development and oversight of projects that affect our social, economic, and environmental health!
Cap the length of the permitting process to just 30 months. This risks having an adequate amount of time to review and analyze proposals that could have major impacts on our environment.
Allow federal regulators to exempt mining projects from the Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA). The EAJA is the law that allows everyday citizens and community groups the ability to hold government regulators and industry accountable.
Of Course Denny Rehberg decided to cosponsor this bill on the 5th. They are planning to vote on it today, July 11. Maybe we should invite Denny Rehberg to Montana to count all the toxic mine sites we still have to take care of after the owners took their money and ran.
