Starting to Bid Farewell to Big Sky Country

( - promoted by Jay Stevens)

My family (aka. me, my wife Emily and my dog Monty) did a hike up Mt. Helena this weekend. It is our last hike up this great mountain that is part of Helena's city park system. This is a picture we snapped on the summit.

We're in that mode now where there's a lot of "lasts" going on - our last hike, my last fishing trip on the Missouri river, our last trip to the Helena Safeway, etc. Of course, it's probably not our last time for any of these things - Montana will still be here after we move to Denver, and we will no doubt be back to visit. But we are really sad to be leaving.

When you live in a small town like this in one of the country's greatest states, you realize all the things you never had when you lived in the East Coast grind. I've learned a ton, both about how to live life, and about how to really do politics out here. I'm going to miss Montana dearly.

Might I suggest........... (0.00 / 0)
that you spend some time over on the eastern slope of Colorado.  Grand Mesa is nice (or used to be before they drilled the beejesus out of it from what I hear), and you definitely should take a drive over Keebler Pass from Paonia to Crestted Butte.  Sure, Crestted Butte is now for billionaires, but it wasn't when my great granddady was a miner and sheriff there back in the 1890s.  But Keebler Pass is an extraorindary aspen forest.  It's unreal if you've never seen an aspen forest.  And Paonia, well, what can I say.  It's the nicest small town in the west.  I used to go there every summer as a kid to visit grandpa's farm.  And I'm serious about this.  Paonia has the best fruit in the world.  So drive over and get yourself some apples and cherries when they're ready.  And spend the Fourth of July there too.  You won't be sorry.  It's a great time.  And since you like to climb, might I suggest the Barr Trail up Pikes Peak.  I ran it back in '77.  They have a race up and down that sucker.  And take in Mantiou Springs while you're there.  All in all, Colorado is gettin' a bit on the crowded side.  But by God it's still a beautiful state.  If you travel around a bit, you'll find a place nearly as magical as Montana.  REAL magical if you go to Mesa Verde.  Best of luck down there, Dave.
