I've written it before but the new Lee Poll confirms. A race between Max Baucus and Dennis Rehberg would be hard fought. The new Lee poll is the first in a while with both Baucus and Rehberg polling higher approval numbers than Schweitzer (Brian still polls at 65%; Max and Rehberg are at 68%). This, of course, could be statistical noise. Or it could be a minor hit from the gaming situation on the Flathead reservation.
It's possible, though, that the race between Schweitzer and Rehberg would be even more of a horse race in initial polling.
My gut, though, is that if Rehberg can hold Baucus to a four-point lead that no other Republican is worth a nickel up against either of our ticket-leaders in '08. And Rehberg would be rolling the dice big time to jump into that race.

If you haven't seen it yet, pharmaceutical lobbyists think Jon Tester "is expected to be a problem." How will Tester pose a problem for these slick lobbyists from one of the most profitable industries in the world? By moving legislation to lower drug costs, saving taxpayers and consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.
It's scandalous, I tell you. Scandalous.
Also, diarist Headwaters makes a nice find: Max's poll numbers surged after his recent stumping with Jon and Brian. In the last month, he went from 61% to 72% approval rating. That comes in large part from strengthened numbers among Democrats, where he went from getting support from 3 in 4 to having approval from 7 in 8.
Being a teamplayer and being seen with a couple populists seems like it was a real good move for the senior Senator. Here's hoping he takes note.

Yesterday, Pete Talbot quoted "a former Baucus campaign coordinator" disgusing Max Baucus' 2008 primary and general campaigns by proclaiming, "You can’t have a thought until you’ve taken a poll."
SurveyUSA released such a new poll and it shows that popularity for Baucus skyrocketed after the senator was seen campaigning with progressive populists Jon Tester and Brian Schweitzer.
Among all voters, Baucus' net approval increased by 18 points. His net support among Democrats increased 29 points and he netted a 20 points gain among Republicans.
Will Baucus stick with Gov. Schweitzer and Jon Tester when it comes to progressive teamwork and economic populism?
