Bad day today.
First the Senate failed to break the Republican filibuster against giving Washington D.C. Congressional representation. Jon Tester did the right thing and voted for cloture.
Next the Senate failed to break the Republican filibuster against the restoration of habeas corpus. Both of Montana's Senators - Jon Tester and Max Baucus - did the right thing and voted for cloture.
Lastly the Senate failed to break the Republican filibuster on Jim Webb's amendment, giving US troops adequate rest before redeployment to Iraq. Both of Montana's Senators - Jon Tester and Max Baucus - did the right thing and voted for cloture.
The September report came and left. Manly, super-trustworthy because-he's-wearing-a-uniform General Petraeus gave his testimony, and it changed nobody's minds. Senate Republicans, who assured us that, when September came, they'd better see some progress or else! passed the buck on Iraq again in nearly exact same numbers as they did the last time we went through this song and dance routine.
If you think Republicans are filibustering a lot, you'd be right. In fact, they're filibustering at three times the historical rate. And these are the same folks that threatened the "nuclear option" against Democrats who filibustered a fraction of the bills blocked this session.
